Finding the Right Contact Lenses

With the variety of contacts on the market currently, it can be intimidating to try to find the perfect pair for your eyes. There are many different types of contact lenses, from hard contacts to soft, from daily-wear to monthlies. Finding the right contact can be difficult, but at Golden Vision, our experienced optical specialists can make it easy to find the perfect pair for you.

The Different Types Of Lenses

When considering contacts, the first choice to consider is which lens material will be best for you and will suit your specific needs. Soft lenses are made up of a flexible substance called hydrogel. These lenses are very thin and will conform directly to the eye.

Another in the category of hydrogel lenses are silicone hydrogel lenses, which allow more oxygen to reach the eye. This type of contact lens was developed in 2002 and was quickly adopted as many wearers’ lens of choice because of its natural feel and smooth texture.

Gas-permeable lenses are rigid—but not hard—contacts that still allow oxygen to pass through them. Hybrid contact lenses incorporate both silicone hydrogel and gas-permeable materials, with a rigid, highly focused center and a silicone outer ring to allow for a better fit on the eye.

Hard contacts, also known as PMMA lenses, are made up of polymethyl methacrylate, which is a rigid plastic material. These lenses do not allow for oxygen to be transmitted onto the eye and can take extra adjustment time.

There are also differences in wear time for contacts lenses:

Lenses can be daily wear, meaning that they need to be removed nightly, while others can be worn for up to 30 days. Daily disposable contact lenses are ideal for first-time wearers and those with an active lifestyle because of their easy one-and-done care routine, whereas monthly contacts require strict care to keep them clean. Two-week lenses require daily cleaning but are designed to be changed more often than monthly modalities, so your vision still benefits from fresh lenses.

Choosing the Right Lenses for You

Each type of lens has different benefits to them, so it really depends on what your daily activities are. Active lifestyles call for active contact lenses.
