Managing Computer Vision Problems

Today, more professions and hobbies demand long hours in front of a digital screen. Yet, it’s well-documented that staring at a computer screen for extended periods of time can have lasting negative effects on eye health.

Digital eye strain is a common issue. At Golden Vision Optometry, we can help treat acute symptoms and prescribe methods to avoid long-term complications. We can provide eyewear to prevent eye strain caused by blue light overexposure.

Symptoms of Digital Eye Strain

Computer vision syndrome (CVS) or digital eye strain includes a group of related symptoms. Your experience with digital eye strain can be unique, so you may notice a few mild symptoms or many severe symptoms. Typically, symptoms are more severe with longer and recurrent exposure.

Common symptoms include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Burning or irritated eyes
  • Fatigue
  • Double vision
  • Dry eye
  • Headaches
  • Light sensitivity
  • Neck, shoulder, or back pain
  • Watery eyes

Without treatment or lifestyle changes, digital eye strain can increase your risk of developing cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal problems, and sleep disorders. Discussing your symptoms with your eye doctor is crucial for improving your comfort and preventing eye problems.

Preventing Digital Eye Strain

Viewing distances and angles for digital screens are often different from printed materials or hands-on tasks. As a result, our eyes work harder to focus and control movement. Flickering screens, uncomfortable lighting, and untreated refractive errors can also make the viewing experience more demanding.

Sit at least 16–30 inches away from your computer screen with the top of the screen slightly below eye level. When glare is a problem, consider a screen filter to reduce glare and blue light. When possible, set up your space to minimize glare from light sources, such as windows or lamps.

Taking rest breaks is crucial to prevent digital eye strain. Typically, you should rest the eye for 15 minutes after 2 hours of continuous computer use.

Another guideline is the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes in front of a digital screen, take a 20-second break. Look at an object 20 feet from you and allow your eyes to refocus and relax.
